I tried to update my avatar and the image did not appear to update.

Ok here is how I fixed it.  I had to check the box that says enable avatar.  Browse for my avatar.  DO NOT HIT UPDATE.  Scroll down and hit save.

It works for me. Hic!

This should have been fixed as of about 11:00AM CST.

I have removed the ability to enable/disable an avatar, which makes the process much more intuitive.
