it was cartographer for me too... someone told me to update to the newest ace3 but i can't find the link for that... so i started disabling addons and cartographer was the one causing the chat to mess up.

i had this problem too, and found out that the following addons will screw up your chatwindow
Autobar (havent found fix for this yet :( )
Cartographer (all addins for this mod will screw up too)
Ace 2 and 3 (strange)
Craftlist2 (upadted this one and it worked again)
Dailie Quest tracker (update fixed this)
ktm (switched to omen and working)
Routes
SCT + SCTD (havent found fix for this)
Spamsentry + spamsentry titan (worked after update)
All the addons i updated i removed old folder before unpacking and it worked after that, just trying to overwrite kept the errors (on my comp anyway)

I had problems with Gatherer. Disabeling gathere alone wasn't enough, i had to disable them all and enable them back without gatherer

This "strsub" error is caused by a program using the old way to hook ChatFrame_OnEvent.
Since patch 3.0, that no longer works. The addon has to use ChatFrane_AddMessageEventFilter instead.
See http://www.wowwiki.com/API_ChatFrame_AddMessageEventFilter.
If you don't know how to reprogram the addon yourself, you'll have to wait for an update. There are still quite a lot of addons which haven't been fixed.

use a program called WOWMATRIX. when you open it, it scans your addons then lists the ones that are needing to be updated in red... Once you hit update all on the top right it will go out and update all of your addons.
Theres a second tab on top that says something like get addons, you can search for addons in there and it will install them for you when you click on one and click install.
I use wowmatrix to update and download all of my addons, its a great tool to use for managing your addons outside of the game.

I use the Curse client to download and update addons. However, no amount of downloading/updating will get rid of this error message:
Error: bad argument #1 to 'strsub' (string expected, got nil) File: Interface\FrameXML\ChatFrame.lua Line: 2218 Count: Infinite
I'm going to blow away the Saved Variables in the WTF folder. I'll update this post if it works.
UPDATE: I had to go the drastic route. I deleted the WTF folder and all add-ons. Then, I installed and tested each add-on one-by-one. For me, the culprit was TasteTheNaimbow. It's an add-on that hasn't been updated since 2007 but still worked until this patch. Oh well.
