Addon search improvements?

I would say the number of addons available via Curse is large enough now that improved (advanced) searching capabilities would be really nice, both in web interface and curse client, such as:

1) ability to filter addons by most fields, such as rating, last update date together with selecting addon categories interested in (as it is now, you can browse by category and order by update time, however, a number of cross-category addons keep messing things up imo);

2) search in addon description (yes, could be time consuming, but not neccessarily so, if DB fields and indices are set up right?)

If I recall it correctly, similar functionality was already found on Curse some time ago, but it seems to be discarded now. While simpler search interface is, of course, nice when you already know what you are looking for, it is not so useful when you are trying to choose, for example, the best of working WoW inventory management addons.

Would be very nice to see advanced search again. :)

So agree, +1.

Now in reality things are most likely not going to change. Your best bet along with everyone else it to use Google to it max.

Try a Google site search like:

site:curse.com threat meter

This is the best way to search descriptions. There is no easy way to limit the results to a patch or date though. It's all we have right now.

See my "Thread to end all threads thread" for the answer to your question!

Searching in descriptions isn't hard to do, its just disabled because most users search by addon name, and in some cases adding descriptions to the default searching just clouds up the results with addons the user is not interested in.

We are currently spec'ing out and implementing an advanced search.

While you're at it...  addon names can contain special characters, including the + sign, which search doesn't support very well.  This makes it really hard to search for addons that fall into that group (e.g. "WoW++") effectively.  Maybe something can be done to remedy the situation?  Of course authors can just rename their addons, but it really hurts to rename an addon after you get the word out.

Nice to know, thanks a lot!

Yes, search in descriptions would be nice exactly for the cases when you are looking for "eg something like TheoryCraft, but not TheoryCraft itself". A lot of addons reference other addons in their descriptions. Categories don't always help.
