Hi, I remembered in the past using an addon on my priest that would use the lowest possible rank spell to give maximum health with lower mana cost, this was Baden's Mana Saver

because of the 2.0 restrictions addons cannot choose different spell ranks for you

as well as post 3.0 all spell ranks have been changed to cost the same(or very close to the same) amount of mana no matter which rank you choose to cast because they now take a % of your base mana

To be more specific, healjunky, "downranking" now costs MORE mana than the highest rank spell you can cast. Yes, this was done on purpose, as the mana regen mechanics have been altered drastically from pre-3.x -- something about new types of encounters in dungeons.
