I haven't looked at the API since last december ish... I don't think that it supports a "range" function for script use. The one that tells you on screen "Not in range" isn't external from what I can tell... otherwise, right now it'd be like on a timer, ticking on your target, getting the range... and it'd increase the amount of CPU cycles your addons are using already...
A lot of the addon's that i've seen, don't work well as a large group, but when you load them individually or like 5 or so at a time it's fine. If you have a really beefy machine you're probably fine, but the large majority of the players probably aren't running high-end machines, and couldn't handle the graphics load, lag, plus all the addon chatter going on...
