Are you running any type of proxy server?

I am also having this problem. There are no proxies in use, no firewall settings blocking access and my username and password is correct. No other changes have been made recently. However, I did try to reinstall the client today, with no change.
Please help, as I don't want to have to find another AddOn manager for World of Warcraft.
Thanks,
Djinn

I've been having this problem now for almost 2 weeks with no resolve. Client worked fine when I first installed and then after about 3 weeks, it stopped working. I've done nothing to my router or its settings so I seriously doubt it has anything to do with port blocking.
I thought I'd add too that I'm running the Mac client, not Windows.

same here:
OS: Vista
Kaelten suggested proxy might be the problem i would like to add some proxy environment settings.
the proxy i am using is squid2.7 running on a linux box.
proxy is advertised by dhcp option auto-proxy-config 252 and by a dns server pointing to a wpad file. the wpad file is locatated on a webserver.
dhcp server is dhcpd3 on a linux box.
dns server is bind9 on a linux box.
http server is apache2 on a linux box.
the proxy configuration is working fine for all applications i am using, except curse client.
there is no difference using explicit proxy configuration, auto proxy configuration or no proxy configuration.
every proxy configuration leeds to "an unknown error occured contacting the server"
even if it would be a proxy problem, a better error message would be helpful ;-)
i would be very glad to see some progress on this issue!

i made a couple of tcpdumps.
see below the packages that passes my gateway when starting the curse client and pressing the "sing in" button.
first of all the proxy is directly detected by dns and not by dhcp. proxy autoconfiguration should try to get the configuration by dhcp first everytime.
when i disable proxy configuration in windows only packages like the last 3 (NBT UDP PACKET(137): QUERY; REQUEST; BROADCAST) appear, nothing else.
--- snip tcpdump ---

I have never been able to use the curse client because of this problem. I used it once with version 2 and then i suddenly got unknown error contacting server. I just downloaded version 3 and I am still getting this error. I am not behind a firewall or proxy server.

Same problem mere. I can not get past the login screen. In the bottom left of the window, I am presented with the following error:
"An unknown error occurred contacting the server"
I am running Windows 7 64 bit, but had the same problem on Vista Ultimate 64bit I have 8G of Ram with an Intel Quat Core processor.
This was a fresh install of the client.

I was finally able to get my Curse client to connect. I had to uninstall my current version and download/install the latest version. Even though it is not the ideal situation, it did work.

In every case we've worked with recently this has been a firewall or other protection software issue. Sometimes the users didn't even know that they had the firewall running.

folks ...
proxy configuration in windows is set to no proxy.
firewall is turned off.
virus protection is turned off.
curse installer is run as administrator.
curse is started as administrator.
pressing the "sign in" button returns "An unknown error occured contacting the server."
the only packages that arive at my linux gateway are the following.
11:58:06.327446 IP 192.168.0.2.137 > 192.168.0.255.137: NBT UDP PACKET(137): QUERY; REQUEST; BROADCAST
11:58:07.082798 IP 192.168.0.2.137 > 192.168.0.255.137: NBT UDP PACKET(137): QUERY; REQUEST; BROADCAST
11:58:07.847221 IP 192.168.0.2.137 > 192.168.0.255.137: NBT UDP PACKET(137): QUERY; REQUEST; BROADCAST
and i really know what kind of firewall i am using and if it is turned on or off.

2 important things to add.
as i have already posted.
first of all i am able to browse the internet, with or without proxy. so if a firewall would block the traffic of the curse client the same rule would apply to my browser.
in addition, if i set my proxy in vista, i can see the curse client requesting the proxy information by dns.
but after requesting the proxy information, absolutly nothing happens, no log entries at my proxy, no traffic at all on the network.

some more info:
Im running Webroot Antivirus w/fire wall, I am the Admin. I dont have any problems with other program, I can get on the Internet ok.
I looked through my quarantine section of my antivirus and I have alot of cookies and mal and trojan.
mabe curse got quarantine without me noticeing it. here is my list:
Trojan Horse:
| Trojan Downloader Matcash |
| DM1110 |
Virus:
Mal/Encpk-CZ no additional info Mal/Generic-A no additional info Mal/ObfJS-BP no additional info
Mal/Packer no additional info Mal/Swizzor-B no additional info
Troj/Agent-GAU no additional info Troj/Unif-B no additional info Troj/Zlobyp-Gen no additional info
Troj/Unif-B this is a newer one it has been block but not moved into the quarantine folder, not saying this is curse. It could have been there for weeks, but
this is what info I have on it. \local settings\temorary intertnet files\content.IE5\WDIZKDEN\index.htm
mabe curse or someone has ran into the same problem and can help.
Just a thought mabe it might be easer to post the fixes that curse has came across as they are working one on one. Now i know it wont help everybody but as the list grows it will, except on special casses. Yes I know that may be time consuming, but some of it may be as simple as cut and paste from your chat log.
I dont chat online ect. so I dont have any of the prog. loaded, if none of this info helps, I will for this.

No, Firewall, no Proxy, nothing, but ...
after some tries the Client connected.
Then i closed the Client, restart and:
An unknown error occured contacting the server. Yes!
And then, it occured to me:
When i deselect "Automatically insatll Addon updates" (Manage Games, in my case WoW / Premium Settings) i've got no problems to connect.

i did a couple of tests without antivirus software active but it did not work.
i had a look to my quarantine but there are no files locked.
i tried the method of the poster above (multiple sign in tries) by clicking "sing in" for ~3 minutes, no success.
the option "automatically install addon updates" is not available for me, maybe due the fact, that i never could login successfully.

is there any way to trace the application? a way to turn on debugging? a parameter to start logging?
