Curse Client: worst application ever

I generally don't rant on my first forum post, but I simply can't do anything else in this case. I can just hope it's a gentle (or maybe not so gentle) wake-up call.

I've seen bad Java programming over the years, but the Curse client beats all. The Windows version completely screwed up my addons folder and doesn't work properly at all. It was bad when I tried it a year ago, it hasn't improved at all over the course of a year either. The Mac version crashes, doesn't adhere to the Apple UI guidelines and consumes and leaks memory like no app I've seen before (and yes, I know it's beta, but in its current state, I wouldn't even dare call it alpha). Choosing Java in the first place for a cross-platform client was probably the most stupid thing any company could do, but they still fall for it. Guess it's easier and cheaper to find some cheap Java sweathouse in India than it is to find a proper programmer.

I know there's some hostility towards WoWMatrix and how they stole both bandwidth and ad revenue from Curse, especially now that you guys are looking to shell in more cash with "Premium" features, but at least they got something right: they had a simple clean and stable client both for Windows and MacOS. Their QT-based interface worked, it was fast and it detected every addon properly. It didn't shift files around, modified it, nor did it touch anything it didn't have in its database.

Now one thing that might actually surprise you: I might even be willing to pay for premium features, but only if I have an addon updater that works flawlessly on my operating system and at least looks like it was made for my OS. With the current boom of iPhone apps it shouldn't even be hard to find a Cocoa developer out there than can whip together a nice Mac client within a week. So please take my advice and google around for a decent Mac developer. Any Mac user will tell you that no matter how hard you try and no matter how much development time you invest in the current Mac Curse client, it's never ever going to work out ok. Hell, I'm even going to throw this in: a REALbasic application would give you a better crossplatform client than the current Java one.

I agree to everything that you have said in this post. The curse updater is probably the worst priece of software out there. It screwes over your addon folder properly and with the utmost care....

I want something simple, that i can control and fast. Wowmatrix did all of that. I understand that the bandwidth loss, etc isnt the Best Thing in the world, but hey.. screwing over thousands of people who now have no other option, apart from manual installation, is NOT the way to go.

People looking for a way to update your addons: Do NOT use this updater. You have been warned.

Really, i rather manual install my addons from now on than use this godawful Curse updater.

thnx a lot.

I've always ran the CC, and even beta version of it...

Version 2 and 3 are working great compared to the 1.xx

I never really had issue managing my addon, never had issue reporting the bug I found.

I use Vista and Win7 on multiple computer and everything is working fine here.

If you prefer to go manual instead of posting usefull bug report it's your choice.

Maybe it's  to hard for you to explain a problem, write down error message or putting screenshot of problem.

Of course, ranting is easier but it doesn't help the community.

The curse client is written in C++, not Java. We also cannot write the client in Cocoa as the client needs to be cross-platform so we used wxWidgets but are working on moving to Qt instead. Additionally the client was written in-house, not out-sourced. Furthermore I do not believe wowmatrix was written using Qt.

Same here. I use Windows 7 and Vista 32 and have never had a problem. I'm sorry to say this notion of Curse moving your addon folders sounds like garbage to me. My addons are in the same place I've had them since September.

Do you even understand the actual issue of why there is a problem?

Research before you complain...

I've never had a problem with the updater, except for the addons I have that are with WoWinterface (thus Curse won't update them, understandably)

Learn to use the software, keep an eye on what your updating, but don't expect a fast-food style of updater to solve all your problems...

Oh and btw, speaking as someone who's got literally quite a dang few addons, WoWmatrix use to actually update addons to the wrong version or in some cases the wrong file. And I'm posting a thread in reply to someone at the forums, so I'll link it. I'm not done with the post, but I don't feel like repeating myself.

edit: sorry if I sound perturbed but I've been reading a lot of crud/meanness from so many different venues on this matter. Before last winter/fall, I used WoWmatrix as well, until I read a thread in the WoWinterface forum and asked for clarification... and I got it. To be quite honest, I'm suprised that both Curse & WoWinterface have been able to wait this long and so patient/nice about the whole thing... I'm sick of it and I'm not having to put up with it to the degree they are.

something to add:

One thing that can help is this:

http://fin.instinct.org/wowmods/

you can get a gadget, google link, rss of this...

It's the best method for those who not only use both sites, but prefer manual and have a great deal of addons.

Please, if you are unaware of an addon's abilities/possible conflicts:

Go to the author's portal.

(There are links to the the portals in the link I put there, just click on the addon, and read it and scroll down).

Agreed!  I can't even tell if the Curse downloader is working.  If it works seamlessly, I might be willing to pay for it if it helps enough.

This is the thread I posted on... and keep in mind that you'd pay for an updater (and not to say they aren't, I'm pretty sure Curse & WoWinterface are working together on something...) but you won't pay for the addons that make your game a lot more player friendly & enjoyable. (not accusing, just pointing out a thought).

But please read my reply at the forums, and realize that addon authors tend to (not all) but most, have a preferred site.. they might offer it on both, but there is usually one they update regularly. Neither Curse nor WoWinterface are going to deeplink the other.

i've only been using the Curse Client updater for a few weeks and so far have encountered no problems whatsoever.  It's worked really well keeping my addons updated in response to the recent patch too.  I'm running Windows XP.
