Keep the Add-Ons Up-To-Date or remove them

I have used Curse for a long time and decided to purchase the premium subscription.  The enhancements are really nice and make updating the add-ons very easy.  However, I find that many of the add-ons are not maintained and no longer function correctly.

What are your rules for keeping them in your database?  You need to contact the authors of out-dated add-ons to require them to update their add-on or remove them from your database.  Otherwise, your database of add-ons will be full of "junk" that does not work.

I used the add-on called "Leave Me Alone" and it was quite nice.  But, it has not been updated since 10-22-08 and will no longer function in WoW.  This is just one example and it should either be updated or removed.

Once they fail after a major patch, author like me receive a warning of removal then eventually get removed.

I don't know the exact rule but I got a few of my unsupported addon removed in the past and it's was ok. (it was pre 3.xx sutff)

Too many addons are out of date and do not work. ZBar3 does not work. Bartender4 works but removes the exp bar. I have gone thorugh numerous action bar add ons only to get them loaded and see that they are out of date and will not work. Can you put a filter on the client so I can ignore addons not updates within X days say? Or simply remove the old ones. I am sure if an addon was last updated in 2008 it doesnt work so why arent they removed?

Don't forget something, people. Every time Blizzard updates the game, even minor revisions, WoW resets the "Load out of date addons" setting to be off. For those unaware, on the character select screen, bottom left is a button called "Addons" and once in that new screen, top right, turn the above back on.

Addons have a Table of Contents (.toc) file that WoW reads to know which files to load for the addon. If you open the .toc file for any addon (any text editor will do) you will see a line that says

## Interface: xxxxx

where the x's are the minimum game version the addon will run on. This is simplified to 30100 for patch 3.10 or higher of WoW, yet the game is coming up on 3.12 and so any addon with a .toc reference of 30100 will show as "out of date." However, the addon, if written properly, will continue to work on 3.11, 3.12, etc.

Of course, if you turn on "Load out of date addons" and the addon still fails, then you know for sure you have to upgrade, or in some cases, find a replacement.

NOTE: DO NOT, EVER, EDIT THE ## INTERFACE xxxxx LINE YOURSELF, OR YOU WILL BREAK THE ADDON WHEN THE AUTHOR PATCHES IT!!!! (In fact, it won't patch properly, if at all.)

In short, having an addon show as out of date is nothing to panic over.

Thanks for reminding everyone of that, but it is NOT the problem.

The add-on database is NOT being maintained with many old ones remaining that no longer work correctly.

We don't maintain the addon database, it's not our right to do so.  The addons are only updated as the respective author wills.
