Well bring it on..

I can recover my account back to normal even if they do hack me so whoopdie do. They did it for a friend of mine who got hacked, he got a HUDGE line of equipment and items restored. It's his 2nd time of getting hacked.

This is the biggest point that is overlooked by most people. It is well know that hackers wait a period of time before hacking your account to throw suspicion off the actual origin of the hack.

callme_charlie In almost every case hackers got to you though sites you visited and then clicked on the links there. NoClick ftw. They then wait, sometimes for months to steal your account items. Installing addons then getting hacked does not mean the addon did it unless you were stupid enough to open a .exe.

THAT MEANS PRECISELY SQUAT!!!

Antivirus is always one step behind the hackerz. Simply because your numerous antivirus scans found nothing doesn't mean it's not there. Take this from someone who would know. I had downloaded several addons from curse that were scanned by no less than 4 antivirus apps.

A short while after this I log on to find 3 yrs worth of characters GONE with peon level ones masquerading around and I get an email from blizz saying I need to change my password due to hacking and advertising.

I eventually got most of my characters and goods back, but it took several emails/gm support requests and quite a few days. Bottom line, just because your a.v. says nothings there doesn't mean it isn't. Don't ever trust anything from a nonreputable site and don't go bitching when you're account gets hacked because you were using stolen software.

angelrock I think you misunderstood what my point was. I was responding the the statements that SquallRinoa89 made. Especially the line about how "The code there writing for it belongs to Blizzard". My intention was to point out that WoW itself was written in Lua and that by saying that the addon authors have no right to use the code base was silly since Lua holds no copyright at all. LINKY I don;t quite understand what you mean by "Carbonite uses Blizzard's trademarks"? As authors we certainly use the API to access the core or WoW which Blizzard certainly controls and rightly so. I am on the side of BLizz on this new policy change and am happy that they have tightened up the reigns some. My biggest gripe is that they no longer allow an author to provide themselves a way to generate some compensation for their hard work. What I mean by "a way" is just a simple little link in their addon that asks the user of their free addon to support the further development of the addon by donating a small amount to the author. I do not think that addons should ever be pay per download.

You are absolutely correct in saying that "Blizzard has every right to say how they will be used even backtracking and saying old addons are not allowed unless they follow new rules" since in essence that is exactly what they have done. So pay addons are not allowed BUT, it's a huge but, how do you keep someone from using an old addon. They have little to no information about what addons we are running and even if they knew the name a few simple text changes in the addon code and it could look like you are running a different addon.

Teek I can not make a sequel to Gone With the Wind unless the author or rightful heirs say I can.

Carbonite uses Blizzard's trademarks to make money whyich is against Blizzard's rules. Comes down to this. Did Carbonite get Blizzard written permission to use those trademarks. Nope and Blizzard has every right to say how they will be used even backtracking and saying old addons are not allowed unless they follow new rules.

LOL, not true at all the code base is Lua and since Lua holds NO license restrictions at all your argument is moot. Even if the code base was, say, Visul Basic was developed by Microsoft does that mean that all VB apps belong to MS? IT would only be copyright infringement if Blizzard actually copied the code line for line since the idea of the addon has been done and done again in various games there is no merit in that argument at all.

I just think at the base of all of this discussion is the right of addon authors to get 'some' compensation for their hard work. In the end there will still be as many addons and as many new addons so there will be little to no impact on the addon community as a WHOLE. Yes, we will lose QuestHelper, Carbonite, etc, boo hoo. If it is such a detriment to the game someone will make a clone. They can call it LazyA@@Helper :)

No they can't. That would be copyright infringement. Blizzard CAN write their own version and include that. They can't simply steal Carbonite legally, any more then any of you can.

The sense of entitlement some people here have is absolutely mind boggling. It's pay software. If you don't want to pay, don't use it. There's no way to justify stealing it, and people like you who try to are the reason why in 10 years the Internet will be locked down. You're leeches who expect to take, take, take, while contributing nothing.

Copyright enfringement what? THe code there writing for it belongs to Blizzard. You're givent he ability to make addons but it's not technically "Yours". Hell, your account isn't even "Yours". Your accounts Blizzards and your charactors blizzards. Your just paying to use it.

So you've contributed what, exactly, to the WoW community? Or any community for that matter? Before you start going all "holier than thou", maybe you should practice what you preach. Sure, you may have "donated" a few bucks to some authors at some point, but that's hardly "contributing".

EDIT: Perhaps you should rephrase as there is a distinct difference between "contributing" and "paying for a service". Right now, you look like a hypocrite.

FYI carbonite quest will soon be done for since it will be going against the new terms of use that will be put into effect 3.1 so yah they better start making it free or risk being shut down. Not to mention Blizz can take the addon for themselves at any moment. Thats why its able to be added

1) Add-ons must be free of charge.
All add-ons must be distributed free of charge. Developers may not create "premium" versions of add-ons with additional for-pay features, charge money to download an add-on, charge for services related to the add-on, charge for services related to the add-on, or otherwise require some form of monetary compensation to download or access an add-on.

I think that covers that part though, Sorry to say
