how to overcome MMO addiction

any thoughts guys? cuz im having a really big problem, i get grumpy when i cant play

You get grumpy, huh? Now THAT'S addiction! I was forced quit Ragnarok Online since I dind't have my own PC and Internet connection ever since I got into college. I'd get anxious and fidgety at first but it eventually wore off. 'Sides, you'll realize the benefits of quitting soon after.

Here, I found this in the Philippine Ragnarok Online forums. It was written by a member there.

Five Benefits of Quitting Ragnarok Online:

1. More space in my head.

2. More money in my wallet.

3. Better performance at work (or higher grades on my card if you're still a student).

4. More time for my girlfriend.

5. More time for myself and the people who matter.

If you can't play and  your feelinggrumpy.. try banging your head on the wall 100 times. yup.. not 99 but 100. lol

but seriously. get a life. go out party, play some sports. I love mmos but I dont let it hinder my activities in the real world. try to focus your anger in the real world through your mmos and not the other way around... try taking off those week long pajamas and socks and go out. there are a lot of things going on aside from your character levelling up.

simply put. get a life.

try playing for just 2-3 hours daily to reduce your addiction

try doing something different like playing sports, watch a movie, hang out with your friends

there are still a lot of good things you can do in real life

it'll be hard to control at a start in a couple of days, but with enough patience and self control, you'll back to a normal guy in no time

You probably need to find a hobby that you REALLY enjoy, not one forced upon you by others. If you let the latter happen, you get frustrated/bored and can't keep your mind off the particular MMO you're craving.

Something that requires heavy concentration is a must.

1. quality love life - check

The answer's very simple. end your life. Just kidding! Lol!

Get into sports, hang out with friends and go out on parties.

In short, Have a Life! ^^v

ah i remember playing basketball with my guildmates when I was still playing RF online

try inviting your  mmo friends for some outdoor activities

Report this thread post

most friends have jobs and families now so we really cant go out as much as we wish. lol

A getaway. try going somewhere away from your pc (and of couse don't bring your laptop). Just bring your camera and go nature tripping. nothing clears the head better than fresh air

Report this thread post

ahh, need to plan for a vacatio in a beach somewhere

we usually do some photoshoots with my mmo friends for some fun and bonding moments, it's really fun, i'll try to post some pics of our photoshoot later

Dude, the way i quit wow. Realising it. Warhammer has MUCH better pvp. I cant even stand WoW PvP, its so unbalanced and damage - health - healing ration is by far not leveled. Ninjas, etc. that ruin gameplay. Basically all i did was do dailies, and then i stopped doing them, because, well, whats the point? Its boring to repeat the same quest for 9 weeks.

The main reason i quit was because i was spending $15 a month to sit around spamming Dalaran, just waiting for a raid to happen. The raid would last about 3 hours max, 2 times a week. Sure those 6 hours a week are fun, but is it really worth 15 a month?

You can enjoy much better games for 15 a month. Hell, free. If you want to quit wow, I suggest playing something like Runes of Magic.. Its actually quite fun, and its graphics are VERY similar to WoWs. Some things RoM does better, but obviously WoW is going to be the overall better choice. (But RoM is free.)

Um, but how's that gonna help Tutubi get over his addiction?

Report this thread post

i think he didn't get the question

=_=

Report this thread post

quitting the game itself and moving to a new game won't help at all

unless you let someone hack your account so you'll lose your desire to play...kidding XD

this is what im doing right now. subscription is ending on the 18th and im already letting it go...

no pressures regarding raids anymore. but ill sure miss my online friends and guildmates.

still getting the urge to play once in a while but friends are helping me overcome it by asking me to come with them for gatherings and stuff...

i guess real life is sooo much better that virtual life

indeed... but the best part is mixing virtual life and real life, meeting your online game friends and hanging out  is really a great experience

Yep, and i did understand his post. He is also getting angry, which like a smoker, he wont let go too easily. The best way is to ween him off a bit. I personally have gone down roughly 7 hours of gameplay each day since i quit wow. (I played 10 hours a day. I mean, literally paying to sit in dalaran spamming trade... :/  )

But ya dude, just quit. Get on to another game that wont take as much time, hang out with friends and other stuff like that.

lol. sometimes, guildies are much better to deal with in game rather than in real life. also, chicks do look better in game :)

I was forced to quit Ragnarok Online since I didn't have my own PC and Internet connection when I started college. Playing at an Internet café eats a lot of money too.

I see a lot of people saying play sports...to me that's just trading one game for another. Try reading, learning an instrument, and like someone else said above - nature hikes. Partying can lead to even worse addictions if you are not careful, I know this first hand. I'd rather be a MMO junkie than an alchy or druggie any day.

Report this thread post

playing sports is good, this'll make their bodies fit and  lean from the long hours of sitting

and yeah reading books is also good, this feed our minds with useful information

thats exactly the excuse i give myself in order to justify my long hours playing. nature tripping is not my thing though. im thinking bout doing yoga or doing some boxing. probably ill find my center, maybe then i can see my life's path leading :D

I'm thinking of doing photography just so I can have a more productive and emotionally fulfilling hobby.

You should also know that smoke and drug addiction are hardly ay different from MMO addiction. it has been proposed for inclusion in the next version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) according to Wikipedia.

The answer is to have an active real-life, that way gaming never becomes your number one priority.

well having an addiction can wear off when the time comes, but the problem is that you don't know when it will happen

ahh. you have a point there. you really dont notice that youre addicted until something bad happens :D

Report this thread post

or your addicted already but denies it.

Report this thread post

maybe.. some people can't face that fact that they're addicted to something until they realized it's already worse

Report this thread post

i forgot the stages of addiction but first comes denial then acceptance. i dunno what follows next :D

Report this thread post

obsession? maybe the part that you can't control yourself

Go to Amsterdam. They have a rehab center for gaming addicts there.

Report this thread post

why go to amsterdam when you can do it by yourself, all you need is support from your family and friends
