Installing a custom UI can be done easily, even MirageUI. There are several custom UI mods out there. Ones like Plagued or Stonerune are newer, and have been updated more recently. MirageUI is one of the oldest ones, though, and has been around since nearly the beginning. It still remains popular because of it's "plain" visual style. Put simply, it integrates into the default UI much better than any of the other UIs do. In other words, it looks more like the original UI, just with some more hotbars. Other, more modern UIs seek to update the visual look of the UI, while MirageUI can be considered to be more "vanilla". It is for this reason I still use MirageUI, and I highly recommend first time custom UI users to check it out.
Installing MirageUI can be a bit tricky, since it has not been updated in so long, but it can be done.
The first thing to do is to download the MirageUI zip file.
Then, download the program called AoC UI Installer, which can be found on this site. Run the program and use it to install MirageUI. Once it is installed, close the AoC UI Installer and reopen it to adjust the options like Buff Icon locations and so forth.
The next thing to do is to update the file versions. The AoC UI Installer apparently has an updater built into it, but I still prefer to use ByCrom, which is another updater, which can also be found on this site. Download ByCrom and run it to update the mod files. Have it delete all the .bxml files at the same time.
The next thing you will have to do is to manually delete a couple files. The main problem with MirageUI is that it has not been updated in a long time. A such, some of the components do not work anymore. Two of them which I know do not work anymore is the custom text colors, and the guild window. Go into the funcom/age of conan/data/gui/customized folder and you will see a file called textcolors.xml. You will need to delete this file as it no longer works with the game, because of patch 1.05. Although, there is a fix for this on the main forums, if you look in the UI Mod section. The next thing to do is to go into the views folder and delete the folder called guild, because the MirageUI guild window mod does not work anymore. This will make the game default back to the original guild window view. Likewise, deleting any if those folders will make the game go back to the default component. If you find that you do not like a change made by a UI Mod, you can delete the offending folder to return that component back to default.
All the other components seem to still work, for now. I hope this has helped you somewhat. You can use those two programs I mentioned to install any custom UI you like. I recommend trying more than one, as they are pretty varied in visual style. I'm more of a "plain jane" kind of person though, so I will always use MirageUI. Good luck! :)
