addons wotlk, vista, mac, not working, can addons do..? and other misc help thread

Ok, lots of people are posting about where to get Wrath of the Lich King and 3.x compatible addons, some people are getting confused by Windows Vista and where it puts files, and there are more than enough threads asking why this or that addon isn't working.

Important links:

How to Install Addons -- NOTE, Windows Vista, as of patch 3.02 of WoW, has changed the path of where addons are saved, see #3 below

Removing WTF, Cache, and Interface folders -- Thank you Camealion

Run World of Warcraft as Administrator -- Again, thanks to Camealion (for Windows Vista users)

If you have a direct question about a specific addon, please either post in the comments of the addon itself (best option) or start a new thread on this forum. This particular thread will not cover "what is this addon" or answer direct questions other than to general addon help. There are more effective ways to get answers to those questions.

1. WotLK/3.x addons on Curse can be found here and wowinterface here and WoWUIWorldofWar has more

2. With the exceptions of addons that control iTunes and Quicktime, which only work on Macs, there is no such thing as a "Mac exclusive" or "Windows exclusive" addon. Just like the install discs, all addons work on both platforms.

3. Windows Vista does installs WoW like this: My Computer\C:\Public\Game\WoW\Interface\Addon Windows XP: My Computer\C:\Program Files\WoW\Interface\Addon and Mac: Macintosh HD\Applications\WoW\Interface\Addons please substitute C: for whichever drive WoW is installed on, and WoW for the long name

NOTE: If for some reason the paths I have put here are not the same paths you have, on Windows use the Search tool for a folder called World of Warcraft; it should contain a WTF and an Interface folder, among other items. On a Mac, use the Finder to do the same thing.

NOTE #2: World of Warcraft creates the AddOns folder inside the Interface folder automatically upon first run. If your Interface folder does not contain a folder called AddOns, then just load the game and exit. It will now exist.

4. Addons that have plug ins such as Fubar and Cartographer have been updated, but remember, not all of the plug ins have been updated. On that note, Cartographer 2 and Cartographer 3 are not the same addon with different version numbers, they are two totally different addons, and Cart 2's plug ins will not work with Cart 3

5. Addons that load or save data to the hard drive, or access the net in any way other than through World of Warcraft are not possible; Blizzard has never, nor will ever, add that functionality. The same goes with addons that automatically do something, start to finish, or move the character, or select targets and attack, without some kind of user input. "But I can automatically vendor greys, or turn in rep items" sure, but you had to click on the appropriate NPC first manually, didn't you?

6. Addons that translate between Horde and Alliance, or between languages within those factions *may* be possible, but they would be huge, and bog your computer and game down so much it would be unplayable. I wouldn't try it anyway, as this violates the Terms of Service, and will get your account banned.

7. If you have updated a mod and it still isn't working, try this, in this exact order, no skipping! Stick out tongue

   i) download the new version of the mod you want

ii) remove or delete the old version of the mod from \Interface\Addons. Do NOT overwrite the files.

iii) browse to \WoW\WTF\account\youraccountname\SavedVariables and either move (if you want to keep the settings for the mod) or delete the .lua and .bak (if existing) for the addon. These are the global SavedVariables that affect all your characters

iv) browse to \WoW\WTF\account\youraccountname\serveryouplayon\character(s)onthatserver\SavedVariables and do the same thing. These are the character-specific SavedVariables

   v) start WoW

   vi) exit WoW

vii) copy the new addon you downloaded in step i into whichever folder is appropriate. See above for paths.

viii) start WoW and reconfigure (safest and recommended option) OR start WoW and do step ix

ix) (optional) copy your old SavedVariables, if you backed them up, into the correct spots. This is for addons that have heavy customization, like unit frames

If people can think of more tips, or links to helpful threads, please do so. Enjoy, and happy WoW-ing! Smile

You are using vista, correct? If so, how far thrrough the path does it stop?

I appreciate the questions and answers, but please ask specific addon help in seperate threads. Keep this thread simply about basic, generic, help and tips. Thank you. Big Smile

I thought of another tip. I had to do this with Cart 2 and some other addons, so here goes:

Find all SavedVariables for the addon(s) in question, and either delete or move them to another place. Load into the game, and see if the addon works. If yes, EXIT out then copy the Saved Variables back into place and then load WoW again. If the issue exists again, you know the SavedVariables are not compatible, and you will have to set them again.

You have to take out all your "old" questhelper first.  Then install the "new" one.

I too was having problems with old addons and couldn't get the new ones to work at all! I was going into (from Vista) :

My Computer/Program Files/Warcraft/Interface/Addons and I could see the new adds in there...

What you need to do is go

My Computer/C Drive/Users/Public/Games/Warcraft/Interface/Addons

The previous poster who couldn't find the "public" folder was probably doing what I was before...I too use Vista and thought I was doing it right before...but obv not!

Hope this helps, all my addons are working fine now! (",)

allright I understand that there should not be any diference between pc and macs.  The problem remains that healbot works better then ever with the new version on the pc and will not even show up in the add on folder on the mac.  So for a program that should be universal for either system it does not work.  So either I am not understanding how to route the program through the mac or there is a new interface issue that doesnt allow the mac to read the program and intergrat it into the game.  Since I did not get a hit on the thread I started hopefully someone here can offer some help.

This thread definitely helped with my problems with Vista and addons!  I thought it weird though that I had gone through the XP way of putting addons in when I installed WoW on my laptop (with Vista), and they worked fine...Thanks a lot though!

edit:  just definitely don't go to Program Files like most XP users are used to...It puts you through a lot of unneeded grief...

Vampy, might want to sticky this, since so many people keep having the Vista issue, among other things.

Little, are you using Vista? Is the WTF folder in any branch of the Vista-WoW path? I don't use Vista, or the Mac OS (I could only wish - *ahem*) so if it isn't, try logging into the game, then exiting. The game automatically creates the \Addons and \WTF folders on first run if they aren't already there.

When I read that I thought I could use Addons again but I have come into a snag.

Computer / Local Disk (C:) / Users / Public / (I looked for Games but it is not there)

I only had Favorites, Public desktop, Public Documents, Public Downloads, Public Music, Public Pictures, Public Videos, Recorded TV and three .DAT files and that's it.

I had to download WoW I did not install from disk (Long story) could that be the problem or am I missing something?

Regards,
BK,

Try running the Repair tool in the WoW directory, and see if it either moves the files and folders for you, or prompts you. If all else fails, do a search on your HDD for the addons folder.
