Curse Client running in WINE

I know thare are some Linux users constantly after us for support, but I happened upon this blog showing him successfully running it through WINE and thought it was pretty cool.  http://www.downfallguild.org/node/6018

I too am a Ubuntu Linux user, and up until 3.0.0.4 had curse client running under wine. For some reason when I updated to the new version it crashes after login.  It was great while it lasted though!

I'll try to setup my computer in linux next week, I'll be happy to test the CC :)

luckly the recent problem with curse client 3.0.0.4 running in wine can be fixed by installing ie6. credit to the person at wine's appdb entry for figuring it out. easy install would go something like.

wget http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks
sh winetricks ie6

I realize that this is probably not the best place to post this comment, but I think the "linux users who are constantly after you for support" would be best served with an app that runs natively in their operating system of choice. Since WoW Matrix has been effectively marginalized, no one has stepped in to offer us a safe and legal manner in which to manage our add ons.

At the time of this posting, Curse.com has pretty much cornered the market, so one would think you'd want to maintain your position by supporting a demographic that has a larger user base than those using Mac OSX. So when we ask for support, what we'd really like to know is:

1) Which linux distribution is being used (Please specify distribution name and version)

2) Which version of Curse client is being used (We know version 3.002 worked flawlessly under WINE, it's later versions that are the problem here).

3) What version of WINE is being used (Ubuntu comes with an older version of WINE than the one on the Winehq website).

4) What hardware is being used (Please specify processor, ram, and any other pertinent hardware used in the installation).

5) And please describe the steps taken to make it work (Since many Ubuntu users are recent windows expatriates, please do so in a manner that the average user can easily understand).

Once you can effectively answer these questions, or at least point us to someone who does you will find us "linux people" quite friendly, helpful, community spirited, and even willing to shell out a few bucks for you premium client.

After doing some research on how to get Curse 3.004 running under Linux, I have put together this simple 'how to' using wine and the winetricks shell script. For this exercise, I used the following:

Linux Distribution: Ubuntu 8.04 (Intrepid Ibex)

WINE verson: 1.1.21

Curse Client version: 3.004

Hardware Used: Dell Optiplex, Pentium 4 Processor, 2GB ram

Now for the 'how to' portion of the show:

For the sake of discussion, we will assume that you already have WINE installed. After all, how would you be running World of Warcraft under Ubuntu without it? So from here, we're going to install Internet Exploder 6, and then move on to installing Curse Client.

1) From your Applications menu, go to Accessories -> Terminal. This will bring up your command line interface.

2) In the command line, type the following:

wget http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks

This will download the Winetricks shell script, which will make the rest of this process a cakewalk.

3) Once Winetricks has downloaded, type in the following:

sh winetricks

This will open up a graphic menu that will let you choose various windows components to install under WINE.

4) Check the box that says 'ie6' and hit the OK button. This will start the installation of Internet Exploder 6. When installation completes, you will see a message on the command line that says "winetricks finished".

5) Download the Curses Client for PC from the Website.

6) When download completes double click on the installation package, and follow the instructions, just like you would with a normal windows application. Note: Make sure that Curse Client is installed on the same drive as ie6, in this case the default c:/ drive.

7) Start Curses Client.

You see, Prodigal? This is how it was done. Enjoy.

i have tried this same way several times and the cc keeps crashing when it tries to open.   i am on linux ubuntu 9.04 i386 with wine 1.1.24 downloading cc 3.0.0.7

the error message i get is...

<!-- @page { margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } A:link { so-language: zxx } -->

The program CurseClient.exe has encountered a serious

problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the

inconvenience.

This can be caused by a problem in the program or a deficiency in

Wine. You may want to check http://appdb.winehq.org for tips about

running this program.

If the problem is not present under Windows and has not been

reported yet, you can report it at http://bugs.winehq.org.

i have tried the apphq site and found the same expalnation to download and setup cc and it is all the same thing... and the results are the same... should i try the same thing a few more times to see if i am not crazy enough yet?  (isn't that the defintion of insanity? lol)

i have ie6 installed... i have changed the config.wtf (in which i repeat in saying to myself WTF????)... and every little thing that the sites say to do and still i get nothing going here... can i cry now or is that still a little to early yet for that?

i am still (in my opinion) a novice in ubuntu and my memory does not give me any benefits since it likes to place some things in different files of which i can never find (and i am talking about my rl memory in my head... =D...)

if anyone can help (which from a remote location to try to view what i did on my computer does not seem to make sense) i am on a computer i put together...

i run ubuntu 8.10 amd64 on one full harddrive... windows xp and ubuntu 9.04 i386 on the other one (the 9.04 is the one with wine and WoW working fine)

i just would like to have the addons for my ubuntu version of wine so i can eliminate windows from my system... any WoW player can understand that i think (except the ones that think linux is an os and that it is just a hobby one that won't make it mainstream... but wait... aren't 80% of the servers in the world run on linux based os's?  sorry my bad... lol)

anyways... what shall i do about cc and it not wanting to run for me? (and i know it is a conspiracy against only me too... everyone elese seems to get it to work fine)

I didn't dl winetrics..

I just dled IE8 and curse started right up.

Granted IE8 wont run worth a damn, but hey thats what firefox is for.

*edit* I noticed one side effect, the launcher for wow is hosed. Meaning no HTMl advertising. The play button and the other buttons work, just not the HTML stuff.

Easy fix for that is just to launch the wow.exe instead of the launcher.exe . Though I think, not sure, the launcher also checks for updates.

after you upgrade wine to the next version i am pretty sure that it sets geko back to the default browser and the wow launcher works again. I am wracking my poor brains on how to get curseclient 4.0 to work now. It looks really sweet but it uses dot net 3.5 and so far as i know that is a nogo for wine at this point.
