For a better earth shield monitor, you might try my buffing addon, ZOMGBuffs, as well as handling all auto buffing needs for all classes, it has a tracking icon for targetable spells like Earth Shield that often need renewing in combat. It'll show a clear countdown with stacks left, and you can simply click it to refresh without messing around with changing targets ;)
